Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild

Yes, you read that title correctly… Wollongong now has a modern quilt guild. A great big YAY!!

This is what I played with, while at our first sit & sew / meeting

But I’ve gone too far ahead of myself, let me go back to the beginning of the day…

For those of you who don’t know much about Australian geography, Wollongong is 80km south of Sydney (so around an hour drive).

Sydney has a modern quilt guild which started a couple of months ago, but meetings are held on the north side of the city, which for those of us living south of Sydney, means it would be a 2 hour drive - each way.

Starting this Wollongong group was Rachel’s brainchild. Saturday was our first official meeting. Super exciting!

Here is Rachel giving her introductory speech and welcoming the group.

It was a like an old fashioned bee, where everyone was around the table, helping pin baste a quilt. Some gave advice, while others did the manual labour. I was the paparazzi.

It was a fun morning and. I enjoyed meeting other quilters from the area… I even got to meet my friend Sue, who I’ve known online for a long time (years!) but had never met in real life.

Sue lives in south western Sydney, but it was closer for her to attend the Wollongong meeting. We did a lot of chatting, and not much sewing, but that is part of the fun – right?

If anyone is interested in joining the Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild, the next meeting is on 17 March 2012. Please check the WMQG website for more details.

  1. What a fun day you had....so nice..I love the colours you were working with....

    1. Thank you. I'm going to call it my licorice all-sort project ;-)

  2. Oh how fun!! One day I'd like to join one, but unless I find one that has childcare, that might have to wait a little while, lol!

    1. Yes, I completely understand Alyce. I was lucky my hubby was home and able to look after the kids.

  3. How wonderful!!! and the quilt you;re working on is just amazing. Can't wait to see the whole thing.

  4. How wonderful. The venue looks very practical. I missed the last meeting of the Sydney MQG because I would have arrived late and travelling two hours each way for an hour of meeting didn't sound like a great way to spend Saturday to me!

  5. I am curious as to the type of white thread used for the quilting in the photo...it really pops out. Is it embroidery floss? If so, is it easy to hand quilt with it? Regardless, I love the look of it!

  6. I live in the US but have family in Woolongong. Small world. I have been reading your blog but did not make the connection until this pst.

  7. I look forward to hearing more about this great guild. I bet you'll be on the committee before too long!

  8. Looks like a fun day! It's great Woolongong has its own modern guild! The Sydney one is a bit too far for me too, maybe there'll be a Blue Mountains group one day.

  9. Woohoo! More Australian MQG.
xxxx from the Melbourne Guild - I will have to time my next visit to Sydney to coincide with a meeting :P
PS Lived in Thirroul and Coledale, went to Uni of the Gong - small world.
And you are all welcome to come to any of our events if you are in Melbourne - just let us know.

  10. Yay! I've always admired your work but never realised that you lived in Wollongong, like me! Unfortunately I couldn't make it Saturday, but look forward to attending one soon!

Thank you for your comment. I truly appreciate the time you've taken to leave me a message. I will attempt to answer comments via email.
