From the Heart - Candle Mat

Welcome to my stop on the 'From the Heart' blog hop, hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Sew. The idea behind this blog hop is to create small gifts (from the heart) which we can make to show our friends and loved ones that we care.

I love candles. I love giving them and I love receiving them as gifts. I have some in a cupboard and everytime I open the door, I get such a lovely smell wafting out from the scented candles.

For this hop, I thought I'd create a candle mat. A small circular mat that can be added to a lovely scented candle and which would make a special gift for someone.

To make this little mat, I got out my wedge ruler and cut out 20 x 2.5" wedges. This size ruler makes 20 wedges, though you can get different sized rulers which would require more or less wedges to make the circle wheel shape.

I sewed the wedges together just making sure that no two same ones were together. Pressed the seams to one side and then sandwiched it to some batting and backing. I machine quilted in the ditch and then added some extra hand stitches with perle # 8 cotton. I really love adding extra hand quilting detail.

I trimmed the circle and attached bias binding and then finally appliqued the circle at the centre.

I love these little candle mats and they're useful for little pots or vases of flowers too.

  2. This is a lovely idea, I don't have anything special to put my candles onto and could make one of these with scraps. x

  7. Super cute candle mats! I would use that as a trivet (since I'm scent-sensitive and don't burn candles in my house.) Either way, those would surely make lovely gifts!

  20. Your candle mat is beautiful. I don't use table toppers or runners on my coffee table. I just picture our cat on a wild run through the house hitting one and flying off. Making a smaller one would solve that problem and still add a little brightness. I have to ask though, where do you buy such pretty candles?
