Strange Days: School Holidays (Autumn 2020)

Well the school holidays seem to have flown by in the blink of an eye. Honestly, our days didn't change remarkably during the two weeks of the autumn break. We were 'supposed' to be on a south pacific cruise these school holidays - we'll just have to go cruising some other time.

We seem to get up later than usual but that's probably because we're going to bed later too. The concept of time and keeping to a schedule has really been relaxed this past month.

We went fishing (yes we're still allowed to fish in our state) and walk around the neighbourhood (for exercise). We cook and bake and look at different ways to "feather our nest".

The 25th of April is Anzac Day. It's an important day in Australia (and New Zealand) when we commemorate and remember our veterans. Most cities and towns have a war memorial and on Anzac Day they're attended for dawn services all over the country.

This year, we were encouraged to get up early for the dawn service, but to stand on our driveways or balconies to mark the day. It was a very different Anzac Day to the norm, but still special. Neighbours came out to the front of houses at 5:55am and tuned into local ABC radio stations to listen to the Last Post, Reveille and then the national anthems.

My son got dressed up in his AAFC uniform as they'd been instructed and saluted as they would normally do at the dawn service. He didn't get to have breakfast and chat with the diggers at the RSL, or march in the parade with this squadron, but he can do that next year.

Like the rest of the country, we've caught the jigsaw puzzle bug. I bought this one a few years ago and it's been sitting, untouched, in a drawer.

We've been working on it over the past days and have only the sky to figure out. So much blue though!!

Have you caught the 'jigsaw puzzle bug' too?

    1. Yes we've had some really lovely warm days and even had the A/C on the other night to cool down the house at bedtime. I think it's set to change later this week and the weather will feel more autumney. Oooh I love a wood fire. Enjoy stitching on these cooler nights xx

  3. Oh that jigsaw is idyllic. Brings me back to the 70s. I saw the Anzac day ceremonies on TV. Though I live in Sri Lanka, I am keenly interested in Australia as my children live there and are citizens there. I know that my grandchildren are very into the traditions of this day even though they are very young. It is good to get inculcated into a country's traditions and culture, once you decide to emigrate.

    1. It really is a lovely scene in the jigsaw. I've had a little look around and the artist has lots of other paintings, which have become jigsaw puzzles available.

I too, like your grandchildren, am a first generation Aussie and follow with the traditions of both my parents and here. Twice as much fun stuff :)

      Thanks for stopping by xx

  4. It was a special way to celebrate the day this year. I am doing jigsaws here too, I like the wasgij type, the picture on the box is not what you are doing on the puzzle, might be what happened after that picture, or what someone in the picture can see. Makes you think. 😁

    1. Oh wow, I've not heard of a wasgij puzzle, but I will certainly go and do some goggling now. I finished the other one last night, so I'm itching to get started on something new. It's a great distraction.

  5. It seems like you are finding a new normal. But! that photo of your son... That brings tears to the eye - not only in what he is doing but the beauty of it.
