Wednesday

For some crazy unknown reason, I was up at 5:30 this morning. While the rest of the household slumbered, I traipsed downstairs to my sewing room to play with fabric. I figured a little bit of productivity in the studio was a better use of my time than laying in the dark, swiping through IG and Pinterest. Aren't these apps a completely wonderful waste of time?

So I made myself a cup of coffee and got busy with my rotary cutter. My basket of 2.5" squares is growing while my scrap tub is looking a little leaner. Just look at all of that space I've created on the top!! These squares are going to be made into a Scrappy Scramble Quilt.

Beside my 2.5" square stash, I've started piling up some pieces that aren't quite 2.5" but still a good, usable size. We need some new table placemats, so I'm already thinking that these pieces will make a great improv style project (x4). It's funny how playing with fabric can help restore the sewing mojo that had been dwindling a bit. Ya know what I mean?

Read my post: Conquering Quilty Fears - Improvisation

So, as my 2.5" basket filled and my scrap tub emptied, my trash bin was looking like a colourful rainbow of scrappiness. And I was having a moment of remorse, thinking about ways I could use up these teeny pieces. GAH!! Step away from the trash. It's a good thing that the weekly garbage collection is tonight.

We spent a bit of time in the garden yesterday. Repotting plants that needed more space. Separating succulents that had good size babies that could move into their own pots.

As it's been a terrible summer for the veggie patch, we pulled up all of the tomato plants that just weren't flourishing. Hubby has since put in a few little cherry tomato seedlings that I hope give us some later summer fruit.

We have some perennial basil in the garden that the bees are absolutely crazy about. It's covered in bees all day, every day. There is a constant buzz around these plants as the bees do their thing. We noticed a few bees with bright blue bottoms. These little guys were fast. They are super fast, compared with the regular honey bees, so capturing one in a photo was tricky.

Looking back through my camera roll, I must have taken about 50 pictures to capture one 'decent-ish' picture. How great are the cameras on phones?!?!

    1. Playing with scraps is the best. Hubby has taken away the bin from my sewing room, so there's no saving those extra little pieces now. Happy sewing!

  2. Had a chuckle at your "step away from the garbage" comment. I probably save bits too small to be worth it too. I keep trying to be disciplined about cutting up scraps, but don't succeed often.

    1. Hubby emptied my bin from the sewing room when I wasn't here, so he's helped me out.
I wish I was organised, but I have a tendency to fill up the scrap tub until it's overflowing and heavy to move around.
      Happy Sewing xx

    1. It was lovely to have that peace and quiet for a few hours. Craziness set in soon after I posted on the blog and I've only now had the chance to sit down.
Are the school holidays over yet?!?!?!

  5. Totally agree that playing in the scraps can be totally motivating (or distracting!) :D

  6. Early morning in the sewing room is the best time! Especially when working with scraps.

    1. I agree completely.
I was all set to get up early this morning again… but it was dark and raining… and my bed was sooooo cozy. Maybe tomorrow?

      Have a happy day :)

  7. We use those "unusable" scraps to make dog beds for local dog shelters, along with small left over batting pieces. Everything is cut up into small pieces (no basting sprayed fabric) and put into old pillow cases and sewn closed. You might check with local dog shelters. Just a thought.

  8. It looks like you are having a lot of fun. I have trouble parting with those small scraps too. I've taken to hoarding them for crumb blocks, which will hopefully keep me working from my stash for a while and out of the fabric store.

  9. How lovely that you could use some quiet time for creating. I had to smile about "Step away from the garbage bin".... I could do with a sign above my trash can some days too, even though I never regret it when I do let the scraps go!
