Q. When is portable, no longer portable?

I have a question for you today and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

When is a project 'too big' to be considered portable?
Is it when it doesn't fit in your handbag any longer?
Or when it's too big to carry around and work on comfortably?

I'm currently working on my crochet granny stripe blanket. I'm probably around 1/4 of the way through making this blanket, so it's getting quite large and sits over my lap (and around me) as I work the stitches.

My kids were at karate and I was waiting outside of the room on a comfy seat. As people walked by, I got a lot of "looks". Some were simple smiles, some were funny looks and some were just plain odd looks. Like I was the odd one.

Which got me thinking, is my blanket getting too big to take out in public? Is it now at the size that it's only an 'at home' project?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. My first thought is that it is beautiful and I wouldn't care what others think of you working on it whenever and wherever. I would keep on doing what you are doing.

  2. Did anyone admire it and tell you how much they like it? I hope so! Or did they just give you looks?
I would bring and work on it until it's too big to manage in public, or too big to lug it around. Keep on keeping on!

  3. A friend of mine does tatting and she gets "the looks" as well. Maybe out of a curiousity as many do not do handwork when out.....most seem to use phones.

    The blanket is looking good.

  4. Love those colors!! Since you asked! My personal thought is that as soon as it is to large for your lap or a tote bag, the project is no longer portable.

  5. I do most of my crocheting in the car, and I stick with baby afghans, so they're easily portable. A larger one is too hard to turn in the car. I say, whatever you're comfortable with is the answer for you.

    1. Yay! We're on the same wavelength. Other than karate (which is later in the evening so I prefer to be inside the building) the car is my usual go-to craft area too. If my project is a little bit large, I just slide over into passenger seat until the kids come out when they're finished their activities.

  6. I took a large lap quilt to the hospital when my mother was having back surgery. I hand-quilted it in the waiting room (during surgery) and later for hours in her room (for 2 full days). I got a lot of attention but mostly because people wanted to see it, ask questions, etc. I think as long as you have room, then there's no limit. It's sure less intrusive that many loud cell phone conversations!!!

    1. Oh yes, those conversations. Especially personal ones, when they should really be private. It's nice that people were interested in your quilt and wanted to know more about it.

  9. It is beautiful.
I would take it any where I wished to work on it. That being said, I would not bring it somewhere it could possibly get soiled or damaged.
People looking at you? haha Sometimes I am doing nothing and people stare at me.... as if I am some how odd.
Anorina, If I saw you working on your quilt here, I could say "That is beautiful!"

  10. Totally depends on where you want to take it. If you ca manage it then it is not too big!

  11. The colors of your afghan are absolutely beautiful! It looks still manageable, and if you get looks, it's an opportunity to talk with new people. Happy Easter!
