When life brings you lemons…

Chocolate, Crochet & Fetch = Good Times

Lemons. Oh my gosh, lemons!

When we first built and then moved into our house, the front and back gardens were a blank canvas. We had all sorts of ideas of what our garden could look like. There was talk of fountains, bird baths, vertical gardens and even at one point, even a pond. I love to watch those English television shows where they "Escape to the Country”. The gardens are always so lush and inviting, filled with beautiful blooms and benches to sit and admire the view. In my mind, a lovely English cottage garden filled with roses was going to be perfect out the back, but the reality of where we live with it’s very hot summers and limited rain has meant that we’ve compromised with hardy, drought tolerant plants.

Right at the back, along the fence line, we planted a row of citrus trees. It’s a sheltered sort of area and gets a lot of sun from late morning right until the sun sets over the hills. We have 3 different types of lemon tree, 2 orange trees and a lime tree.

Over the past few years, we were lucky to have a lemon or two from the trees. But this year, the lemon trees have come into their own. They're jam packed with gorgeous lemons, ripe for the picking. What to do with so many lemons? That’s the question.

I was watching “Have you been paying attention?” the other night and they referred back to an episode of “Masterchef” where the divine and wonderful Maggie Beer made a special guest appearance. I absolutely love Maggie Beer and her cooking approach (not to mention her burnt fig ice-cream). In the invention test, Maggie asked the contestants to make lemons the hero of the dish.

Well I, with my bazillion lemons, took notice and found that episode of Masterchef (Season 9, Ep 2) through Fetch and the Catch-Up TV functionality. Honestly, how did we ever live without catch-up tv?
I must admit, I love to watch cooking shows and with Fetch, I can watch them, whenever I have time (or looking for foodie inspiration). If I’m organised and remember when they’re on, I can record (or even series-link) my favourite cooking shows on the huge Fetch 1TB hard drive… and if I’m not organised, I can go and have a look at the catch-up television options. It’s a win-win!

In keeping with the “citrus” theme, I thought it might be fun to see what citrus-sy shows I can watch with Fetch. The first which came to mind was of course “Orange is the New Black” on Netflix. It’s one of my favourite shows, but can you believe I still have seen the newest season!??! This is one shows that I’m looking forward to seeing - but it’s possibly best to watch when the kids are at school or after they’ve gone to bed.

“The Oranges” stars Hugh Laurie (from House) and Allison Janney (you remember the cool dog-loving mum from “Juno” right?). “A Clockwork Orange” is a Stanley Kubrick classic, though probably another film best suited until after the kids are asleep.

My son loves the film “Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events” starring Jim Carrey and Jude Law. There is also the new Netflix Original series starring Neil Patrick Harris of the same name. It’s a little bit weird, a little bit quirky, but a fun film to watch with the kids (especially older primary school age kids / tweens).

Back to my lemons… what am I going to do with all my lemons? So far, I’ve made a few batches of lemon butter, which is absolutely delicious on toast or crackers. One of the Masterchef contestants made a delicious looking "Lemon Drizzle Cake with Thyme", so I want to have a go at making one of these on the weekend - did I mention I have thyme in the garden too?

But even when you don’t have enough time (see what we did there?) – Fetch has our back. As a family, we love to watch Masterchef and The Voice… except that they’re on at the same time, plus they start too late for the kids to watch to the end. Fetch allows us to up to record 6 shows at once (yes, 6!!) and still watch a 7th show. Now, I don’t know if there has ever been a time that there have been this many things that we want to watch, all at once… but if there were, we’d be set! The Fetch Mighty is also a PVR with 1TB of memory - that’s over 500 hours of content that can be stored.

And if we forget to record something, Fetch has ALL of the Free-to-Air catch-up apps. All of them! We used to try to watch the catch-up programs on the iPad but now they’re all available on Fetch, to watch on the big screen, where everyone can sit and watch together. Not only the catch-up apps, but also the Netflix, Stan and YouTube apps. It’s all there with one remote.

I’ve had such fun discovering what Fetch have to offer, but I’m sure there is more that I haven’t figured out yet. And now, I have a little while before I need to collect the kids from school, so I’ll just gather my yarn, hook and head over to the couch, my Fetch box and watch a catch up episode of The Pioneer Woman on Food Network. Ree makes the best food!

What are some of your favourite shows on at the moment?
Anything you recommend on catch-up?

  1. I think lemony desserts, cakes, slices etc are my all time favourites even beating anything chocolatey, and that's saying something ;)! One of the easiest and yummiest desserts is Lemon Posset, which incidentally I also first saw on one of Maggie Beer's shows, years ago. Just bring some cream, lemon zest and sugar to a boil, remove from heat and add lemon juice and let set for a few hours. Heavenly!
