CROCHET: Making Rainbows

Crochet has been my distraction of late. I find that sitting and crocheting is exactly what I want to be doing, ALL THE TIME. It's not practical. Really, it's not. There are things that need to be done around the house. Sooooo... I make little deals with myself.

Do a load of laundry and you can go and crochet a couple of rows while waiting for the spin cycle to finish.

Clean out the refrigerator and reward yourself with a little hooky time.

Prepare dinner early and you can crochet while the kids are doing their homework.

Among all of this crocheting, I do have a number of sewing deadlines looming. I will need to give up the crochet hook for a little while and reacquaint myself with the sewing machine. Bernie (my Bernina) has been feeling neglected of late so I must go in and remind her that I do still love her very much.

I bought these yarn cakes at Lincraft a few weeks ago. I couldn't resist the lovely stacks of pretty yarn cakes on the shelves. I mean "cake"? Who can resist cake?

The self striping style of this yarn cake is such fun to work with. I'm not overly concerned about the yarn changing colour in the middle of a row. I guess cutting and working the yarn at different times is an option, but in my opinion, it really defeats the purpose of the idea cake.

The colours in this rainbow cake are bold and bright. Crocheting with this yarn is lovely and the rug is coming along quite quickly (with my 5mm hook). The yarn has sprinkles which I love! Little bits of colour which looks like it's 'leeching' into the next solid colour. I really like them.

Have you crocheted with a stripe yarn cake?

What have you made with yours?

Do you have a favourite pattern to use?

    1. Thanks Shez. I'm pretty pleased with how it's coming along. I just finished a 2nd yarn cake and am wondering whether I should try to get another one or just border it in black.

  3. I'm reading this article & knitting with the same yarn (colour Zesty Lime)
It's not exactly the feel I expected. Have you washede your finished blanket yet? Does it soften after a good launder?

    1. I haven't quite finished my blanket yet, though I must admit that it doesn't feel too bad to me. A little bit of woolwash in the machine should make it lovely and softer. Hows your progress going?

    1. Hi Linda,

Thank you! Lincraft is at least an hour away from me too (luckily) but it's almost the school holidays. I'm sure the kids could be persuaded for an outing if I bribe them with a milkshake.

I like the mint fairy yarn cake too. Who am I kidding? I like them all!

Have a lovely weekend my friend :)

    1. Thank you Faith and yes, it's super addictive. I have a house to get tidy today... and then I'll reward myself with a little bit of crochet after the kids get home from school. Have a great day :)

  6. This is very effective with the colour changing yarn. I really like the way it is turning out. How big do you plan to let it grow?
