Umbrella Prints Trimmings Challenge 2015 - Thread Catcher

Umbrella Prints is an Australian textile manufacturer, specialising in organic printed fabrics. The prints are modern and funky with unusual colour pairings which makes them truly unique.

Now in it’s 6th year, the Umbrella Prints Trimmings Challenge is now on. To enter, you need to purchase a trimmings pack from their online store. It’s a bit of a lucky-dip as you don’t know exactly what you are purchasing. The only thing you can decide is the basic colour-way – I chose the “peachy keen” packet.

With my peachy coloured print packet, I came up with this thread catcher.

I created it by layering a piece of calico (approximately 7” x 18”) with batting. I then quilted some of my favourite cotton/linen blend fabric in a luscious cinnamon colour, to the bottom section with straight lines in varied widths.

Next up, I chose a few of the Umbrella Prints pieces and stitched and quilted those – just above the bottom section. I covered these raw edges with some red/white gingham bias binding.

I then placed a piece of the cotton/linen fabric on the top section and quilted in straight lines again – this time going from side to side rather than vertically.

Once complete, I trimmed, sewed it together into this bucket shape (with a 2” boxed bottom).

Added a loop of cotton tape to make it easier to pick up at take with me when I sew in different rooms of the house or in the car.

I lined it with some pretty floral fabric which I had in my scrap basket and top stitched the top to finish it nicely.

It’s a thick and sturdy little thread catcher and holds itself up quite well. The extra batting and backing fabric was fiddly to work with and turn out, but yielded fantastic a result and I’m really happy with it.

The Umbrella Prints Trimmings Challenge is open for another week-ish.

I still have a few trims left… I wonder if I can make something else in that time. I’ll let you know how I go…

  1. Great idea! A friend of mine has a similar design that isn't as heavily quilted. She also has a small pincushion attached to her catcher with just a strip of fabric. She out some gripper fabric on the back of the pincushion so if she puts it on a table it will hang over the edge.

I may have to combine your two ideas and make my own adaption.

  3. What a clever idea! I think it's great to use special fabrics for the 'everyday' things - after all, it's the special stuff that we want to see each and every day. Well done and good luck in the Challenge!
