I missed seeing The Book Thief while it was showing at the cinema, but have been lucky enough to receive a review DVD to watch in the comfort of home.

Set during World War 2, The Book Thief follows the story of Liesel (Sophie Nelisse) who is adopted by a German couple (Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson), after her mother can no longer care for her. Despite arriving at their home, illiterate, Liesel is encouraged to learn and read by her doting adoptive father.

We witness Liesel befriending in Max (Ben Schnetzer), a Jew hiding in the couples basement, from Hitler’s army. Ultimately, words and imagination provide the new found friends with much needed escapism from the shocking events unfolding around them. Soon, Leisel begins writing her own book, which catches the attention of Death (The Grim Reaper).

I enjoyed this film, even though it was always going to be very sad. I’ve downloaded the book to read on my kindle during my kids after school activities.

As I mentioned earlier, The Book Thief is also available as a digital download. Don’t you just live this new era of digital entertainment? It’s so easy – just log into iTunes or Google Play and download the film onto your iPad or tablet and watch it at home, or on the go?

Have you tried Digital Downloads yet? They’re definitely a great way to keep the kids entertained during long car trips, or for the sibling who is not participating in the afternoon activity, to stay entertained (and uncomplaining).
