Foundations and Blocks : Thinking of 2014

I’ve decided that in 2014, I want to make some traditional quilts. In my mind, traditional quilts are more labour intensive and detailed than modern quilts. Even though I plan on using traditional blocks, designs and patterns, I will continue to use my favourite bright and happy printed fabrics.

Here are a couple of books which I received, and will get me started:

Best of Fons & Porter Paper-Pieced Quilts

Best of Fons & Porter Paper Pieced Quilts

This book is just perfect for anyone wanting to tackle paper piecing. It includes 22 of the most popular projects (from the Fons & Porter magazine), of all time. From challenging quilts, to easier foundation pieced projects of all sizes.

Best of Fons & Porter Paper-Pieced Quilts features beautiful photographs, which in my opinion, are very important along with easy to read, step by step instructions and diagrams.

In among the beautiful projects, the reader will find “Sew Easy” techniques. Pages dedicated to learning new or perfecting skills and techniques; such as Fussy Cutting with templates, Foundation Paper Piecing, Mitered Borders, Piecing NY Beauty blocks… and many other fun things.

Project Linus Michael Michalski

If nothing else, Best of Fons & Porter, Paper-Pieced Quilts will inspire the reader to get into their sewing room and sew. With so much beautiful  inspiration on offer, it’s difficult to resist the urge to create.

Best of Fons & Porter Paper-Pieced Quilts is available at CanDo Books and Booktopia.

Fresh, versatile designs for quilts, clothes, accessories and decor.

This little book is just perfectly thought out. It’s comes in a hard cover with spiral binding, so that pages stay open when following instructions on how to cut or make a quilt block. How many times have you followed a pattern, to have the page your were looking at, flip closed?

The purpose of this book is to offer a modern perspective on the three fundamental methods for sewing quilt blocks: traditional piecing, foundation piecing and applique.

Each section begins with the basics about techniques and materials. The 25 blocks in each section include patterns, cutting instructions and illustrations and possible settings and combinations with other blocks.

This is the perfect reference book for a beginner. It has excellent images and instructions and is full of ides and inspiration. The possible combinations are endless and this book is the perfect start to any quilting adventure.
