Sunny Mug Rug {Week 8/52}

It’s Week 8 of the 52 Week Scrap Challenge. I have to admit that I've enjoyed finding fun projects in a bid to use up my fabrics from my scrap basket.

This week, I’m sharing a happy, sunshine-y mug rug which I made for a swap partner a couple of weeks ago.

Sunny Mug Rug

After that initial flurry of mug rug making, when I first discovered them, I hadn’t made one for the longest time. It was a fun project to work on and which was complete in under 2 hours.

I began with some blue fabric – it was as long piece, but not quite wide enough for a mug rug, so I pieced it together. I then delved into my scrap basket for some red, orange and yellow fabric scraps.

I used a mug to draw a circle around some bright red/orange fabric which was to be the sun and then I used a ruler to make long triangles on the back of some vliesofix (fusible paper) and then cut and pressed them onto the back of my pretty yellow and orange scraps.

Free Motion Raw Edge Applique

Once I had all of my pieces fused and pinned into place, I lowered the feed dogs and did a little little free motion machine applique… a process which I adore, but don’t get to do as often as I’d like. I really must do it more often. I really enjoy the challenge of sewing as close to the edge of the fabric, without going over.

I quilted it with some heavy stippling in a lovely light blue Aurifil thread from my V & Co thread set.

Black and white stripe binding finished it off and I was absolutely pleased with the final result. A quick finish is a good finish, right?

If you make a Sunny Mug Rug and blog about it, please leave your URL in the linky below so we can come and visit your blog. Otherwise, share your pictures in the 52 Week Scrap Challenge Facebook Page or Samelia’s Mum Facebook Page. We would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see what you come up with.

  1. I have a confession - I am scared of free motion sewing. So I may have to have a go at this as a way of facing my fear.
