How do you take care?

Sponsored by Nuffnang

I’ve always had an interest in craft. From a young age, I remember sitting with my grandmother while she made clothes for my sister and I, on her old Singer treadle sewing machine.

My mother is also crafty and back in the 80’s was very interested in Hobbytex (fabric painting) and cottage crafts - remember when those fabric covered tissue boxes and picture frames were the “in” thing?

When my children were born and I left my full time paid job, I needed an outlet. Something that I could do that was all mine. For me, it was learning how to embroider and then quilt.

I joined a group at a local church which was mainly made up of seniors. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good chat with my senior friends and they are an amazing group of women with a huge knowledge and experience base. I learnt how to embroider with them and for this I’m very grateful.

Here is one of my first projects… which I still use. It’s a needle case. The embroidery design is by Natalie Lymer of Cinderberry Stitches.

The group would meet up on a Tuesday morning, which was the day my son was at day care and I’d leave my daughter at my mothers house for a few hours.

Unfortunately schedule’s change and life happens, and I was no longer able to keep attending the Tuesday morning groups… so I googled. I learnt patchwork and quilting by reading online tutorials and watching you tube videos.

I would dearly have loved to learn face to face, but generally, craft groups and small children, don’t mix. Know what I mean?

One day, I’d like to start this type of group in my local community. I’d like to be able to get mum’s (or dad’s) together, to be creative and learn a new craft - in a space where their young children / toddlers are also welcomed.
